Minnesota Tornado Viewed from an Airplane
Last night, June 17, 2009, I flew Delta Airlines Flight 741 from JFK to Seattle. Seated in Seat 12A, the south side of the plane, I noticed an amazing lightning storm. I had a small video camera in my carry-on bag, so I was able to capture it on the video below. As you can see in the film, I used the in-flight status screen to determine our location: just southwest of St. Paul, Minnesota.
At the office this morning, I was showing the film to Alex, a developer on the Cheezburger team, because he used to live in Minneapolis. He mentioned that there were tornadoes in that part of the state at the same time, and we suspect that this video captures that storm from above. (Here’s the Minnesota Star Tribute report.)

The most intense lightning show I ever encountered was driving from Minneapolis to Rochester, MN. What a show, especially when the bolt lite up the car when it hit about 50 feet in front of us. Non-stop flashing… like the stadium 2 seconds before the Superbowl kickoff.
