A Simple Design Philosophy
The other day I was talking to a designer about web design, and I asked this particular designer their web design philosophy. Without thinking about it, they said:
Streamline the message.
Get rid of all the crap.
And, tell the user what to do.
Not a bad plan of action, if I do say so myself.
I wonder if every designer has these questions in their back pocket? I worked with a terrific designer, and our conversations were fairly predictable.
“What is the one thing this page is supposed to do?”
“What can we get rid of?”
I have taken to just asking myself these questions at the start, if only to save time later. (I wonder if there’s a life skill here outside of web design?)

Oh so close!
* Streamline the message (unfortunately, it always needs streamlining)
* Don’t create crap in the first place
* Do what the user expects so you don’t need to tell them what to do!
